Is signing a PDF here free?

You can sign one PDF without an account to try the editor. That result carries a watermark and is not meant for real agreements. Sending documents to other people and getting sealed, binding copies is part of the paid plans on the pricing page. There is no free plan.

Is a typed signature valid?

Yes. US law defines an electronic signature as a sound, symbol or process adopted with intent to sign, so a typed name counts as much as a drawn one. What matters is intent, consent and a record of the act. See is an electronic signature legally binding.

How do I get someone else to sign my PDF?

Create a company account, upload the PDF, add the signers with their emails, place a signature field for each of them and send. They sign from the link in the email, in the order you set, and everyone receives the sealed copy.

What happens to the file I upload?

A file uploaded in the try out editor is kept for 24 hours, or 14 days if you create an account, and is then deleted. It is stored privately and is never listed or shared.
